EXAMPLES OF QUESTIONS ASKED BY OUR CLIENTS:

“I work for an audit company and this year, I am not clear about a few aspects of customer incentives under IFRS 15.

For example, a wholesale company provides free insurance coverage to their dealers if they purchase a specified amount of products during the financial year.

How should this transaction be treated? As a reduction of revenue or as marketing expense?

In addition, it may be mentioned here that insurance plan is purchased by the company from insurance company so that they can provide it to dealers.”

“We have taken a plot of land on a 25 years lease, the lease agreement provides that after 25 years the lessor will review and they may give the land on lease for another 25 years.

The lease rent has been fixed for the first 10 years. In year 11 depending on the economic situation/currency inflation etc., they will setthe rate for another 5 years.

So kindly let me know how to calculate the lease liability, because even though the lease period is for 25 years, we have lease rentals for the first 10 years.”

“We are a state-owned company and we are in the process of adopting IFRS. IFRS 1 First-time Adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards requires applying IAS 16 to our fixed assets as if it has always been applied.

This is impossible, because we own a lot of assets (buildings and machines) that were either given to us in the past and most of old accounting records are not available anymore.

What shall we do?”

“I’m working at telecom company and we have huge trade receivables account with other operators, also banking interest rate is 10 % for one year. Based on historical data they paid their debt after 21 months from issued invoices, so that my question is about net present value (NPV).

Should we NPV for current receivable balance as expected credit loss and illustrate in balance sheet or not? If yes with which rate? What is the IFRS 9 opinion about net present value and net future value?”

“The new IFRS 17 is a complex standard. In particular the “basic block approach” used for calculation of insurance liabilities and its variation called “the variable fee approach” seem a challenge for the standard’s adopters.

We are aware that the standard is aimed mainly at insurance companies, however the way IFRS 17 defines insurance contracts, makes us suspect that certain agreements concluded by our company (being a financial institution, but not an insurance company) could potentially be classified as insurance contracts as they contain a risk, which is similar to “insurance risk” as described by IFRS 17.

In your view, is there a risk that our company could be forced to implement IFRS 17, even though it is not an insurance company? Are there any exemptions form IFRS 17 application and / or simplifications in cases like ours?
